Harley-Davidson 2020 Softail Lineup

Soft Tales

Harley-Davidson’s new Softails aren’t the same as the one your dad used to seduce your mom back in the early 1990s. Some of us have two Fat Boys to thank on Father’s Day: the one who created us, and the one gave him the chance to do that. The elder Softails were far more about the look of a classic rigid H-D, just with a hidden rear suspension tucked under the frame. In those days, the Harley performance Big Twins of choice were the FXR and, later, the Dyna. That was all well and good for a couple of decades but eventually Harley melded performance and the shockless look into the new monoshock Softails in 2018, marrying style and function.

harlley-davidson low rider s
One look at the Low Rider S is all it takes to see how far the Softail family has come. It’s the latest pony in the Softail stable. With every Softail, you get a lighter frame, responsive new suspension, and the power of the Milwaukee-Eight v-twin engine.

In keeping with the custom tradition, each model has its own attitude and style. Ranging from the blacked-out nostalgia of the Heritage Classic to the post-modern edge of the Fat Bob and FXDR 114 models.

Fat Boy 114

The Fat Boy shed 30 lbs for 2020 but not enough weight to change the look. Rather, think of it as a bit of a sculpting phase without losing any bulk muscle. Its solid disc wheels are swathed in a 240mm rear tire and 160mm front tire. It also gets satin chrome finishes and signature LED lighting.

Heritage Classic 114
Heritage Classic 114

The Heritage Classic’s name sums it all the way up. Harley’s nod to its roots is a modern Softail in mid-20th Century clothing. It’s also one of the few models available as both a 114- and 107-inch variety.

Low Rider
Low Rider Softail

Harley bills the Low Rider as “rugged individualism turned to metal with a rake on its front end, dual tank gauges, and ‘70s-inspired graphics.” While I don’t doubt any of that, what really makes it stand out to me is the fact that it’s the second least expensive model in the line, leaving you with about $4k to play with before you’ve spent as much as you would have on one of the others.

Softail Slim
Softail Slim

You get the classic look of spoked wheels, chopped fenders, and floorboards on the Softail Slim. It’s also 35 pounds lighter and packs greater lean angle than older Slim models.

Sport Glide
Sport Glide

I must say I’m puzzled that Harley-Davidson didn’t power the Sport Glide up to 114 inches. The MoCo did it with some of the other Softies and who doesn’t like more horsepower in a bike with “sport” in the name? The model features a mini batwing-inspired fairing and saddlebags that both detach in seconds to give you weekend travel capacity without going full bagger.

Street Bob
Street Bob

One of the few instances of Harley-Davidson including apehangers as stock, the cheapest of the Softails is all about blacked out surfaces, spoked wheels, hidden digital instrumentation, forward controls, and chopped fenders.
