Let’s set the Wayback Machine for late 1800s. Andrew Mack was a pinstriper in a wagon and buggy factory, and he hated the brushes his employer provided. So he designed his own brush, and it didn’t take long for word to get around about how good it was.
Not much has changed in the last 130-odd years. Professional pinstripers still prefer Mack brushes, and they’re still made by hand in the company’s Jonesville, Michigan factory. If you want to channel your inner Von Dutch, Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth, or Dean Jeffries, Summit Racing has the Mack Brush Company pinstriping brushes you need—75 types of brushes, in fact, including these:
Mack Brush sword-style pinstriping brushes are made from 100% squirrel hair. Squirrel hair is very fine and flexible, and it holds more paint than brushes made from synthetic materials. That means better control and paint flow. The sword shape is ideal for pulling straight lines and gentle curves; if you’re new to the craft, sword brushes are the ones to get.
Mack Brush Series 10 brushes are made just for pinstriping. They are made from the finest grade of blue squirrel hair, which provides better control for smoother lines, lasts longer, and withstands thinners and reducers than ‘standard’ squirrel hair. Series 10 Brushes are available in sizes 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, and 3.
Mack’s Series 20 brushes are perfect for general paint touchup as well as pinstriping. They’re made from brown squirrel hair that is lacquer- and enamel paint-resistant. Series 20 brushes are less expensive than the Series 10s, so you might want to use them if you’re just starting out. Series 20 brushes are available in sizes 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
XCaliber Pinstriping Brushes
Mack Brush XCalibers are dagger-style pinstriping brushes. They’re made from the same blue squirrel hair as the Series 10 brushes, but shorter–just 1.5 inches compared to the standard 2 and 2.5 inch long brushes. The shorter hair length provides greater control for intricate designs, scroll work, and outlining flames. XCaliber brushes are available in sizes 0000, 000, 00, and 0.
Pinstripers Starter Kit
Mack Brush Company’s Pinstripers Starter Kit is a great way to jump into the world of pinstriping. It includes:
• Series 10 00 and 000 sword brushes
• Wizard Black Widow 00 scrollwork brush
• 4 ounce cans of 1-Shot white, black, and bright red paint
• Aluminum brush box
You also get a Wizard’s Pinstriping Masters Dagger DVD. It’s chock full of great tips and tricks by legendary pinstriper Steve “Wizard” Chaszeyka on creating dagger-style pinstriping and improving symmetry, design capability, and line quality.
Summit Racing also carries Mack Brush Company lettering and sign work brushes, brush and airbrush gun cleaners, brush oil, and guideline pencils and layout powder.
And don’t skimp on the paint—Summit carries One Shot Lettering Enamel Paint, the stuff used by the pros on countless pinstriping jobs since 1948.
